about

It began with snowfall and more snowfall.  For five full days it came down. Ice had brought down the power lines and candles lit the night.  Dan Matz was holed up in an upstate New York farmhouse with an acoustic guitar and dulcimer.  Anna Neighbor joined him on piano and added her honeyed voice to his melodies.  Warmed by cheap red wine and bourbon, they played each night until dawn.  When the electric was finally restored they turned on the recording gear and plugged in the keyboards, but still opted for candles.

Carry Me Over intimately captures the songs written during this winter storm.  Unlike Matz’s previous work with The Birdwatcher, Windsor for the Derby, and Michael Gira which have taken on average of two years to record and mix, Carry Me Over was tracked and mixed during a two week period in Dan Matz’s Hope Union studio.  From the spark and jangle of the title track to the folk-pop of “Possessions in a Nest,” Matz captures a spontaneity and energy that can be so hard to find in the sterility of the typical studio setting.  This recording further refines the minimalist aesthetic realized in his Windsor and more specifically The Birdwatcher projects, but infusing it on this recording with a pastoral, Syd Barrett-inspired pop approach.

On Carry Me Over, Matz continues the more traditional songwriting approach he first began with the aforementioned Birdwatcher project.  The Germanic waltz “To Know My Song” depicts Matz’s recent move from New York City to the bucolic hills of Boston Township, New York.  “Bearcat Blues” and “Matthew” are stripped down, yet cathartic; odes to love lost and longed for.  All of these songs combine on Carry Me Over to tell a story- the story of a winter storm.  A beautifully spare and personal album, Matz continues to develop and mature as a songwriter.
